The Timeless Legacy of Kundan Jewellery: A Royal Art Form
What is Kundan Jewellery?
Kundan jewellery is one of India's oldest and most exquisite forms of traditional jewellery-making. Originating in the royal courts of Rajasthan and Gujarat, Kundan is a technique that involves setting highly refined gold (known as kundan) around gemstones to create intricate, breathtaking pieces. The word "Kundan" itself means pure gold in Sanskrit.
A Royal Origin
The art of Kundan jewellery dates back over 2,500 years, with its roots in the Mughal era (16th–19th century). It flourished under the patronage of Mughal emperors and Rajput kings who adorned themselves and their courts with elaborate Kundan sets. Cities like Jaipur, Delhi, and Bikaner became the epicentres of this craft, each developing its own distinctive style.
The Making of Kundan
Creating a Kundan piece is a labour of love that requires extraordinary skill and patience. The process involves several stages:
- Ghaat – Shaping the base framework in gold or silver.
- Khudai – Carving out cavities where gemstones will be set.
- Pakai – Setting the stones using lac (a natural resin) as a base.
- Kundan Setting – Pressing pure gold foil around the stones to hold them in place.
- Meenakari – Enamelling the reverse side with vibrant colours, a hallmark of authentic Kundan pieces.
Kundan vs. Polki
Kundan and Polki are often used interchangeably, but they differ in one key way. Polki uses uncut, raw diamonds in their natural form, while Kundan uses glass or gemstones set in refined gold foil. Both techniques are deeply intertwined in bridal jewellery traditions across North India.
Kundan in Bridal Jewellery
Today, Kundan jewellery remains the crown jewel of Indian bridal trousseau. A complete Kundan bridal set — featuring a necklace, maang tikka, jhumkas, passa, and bangles — is considered the ultimate symbol of elegance and heritage. Brides across India and the diaspora choose Kundan for its timeless beauty and the way it catches light with unmatched brilliance.
